Private-Label Litter Box Carbon Filters: What a Pet Brand Has to Decide

Part format, carbon or zeolite, an exact fit, the replacement interval and the packaging — the five decisions behind a replacement filter that sells under your name.

A pet brand needs a maker that produces the carbon media and cuts it into your part in the same plant, so you can change the adsorbent, the thickness and the outline without changing suppliers. The filter itself is the easy half. What decides whether the replacement sells is the part format, the adsorbent behind it, an exact fit to your housing, and packaging that ships under your name.

Who makes replacement carbon filters for cat litter boxes that a pet brand can private label?

Most litter box filters on the market are made by one of two kinds of supplier. A trading company buys finished pads from a factory and relabels them. A manufacturer makes the media and converts it into the finished part. Both can put your logo on a bag. Only the second can change what is inside the pad when your customers start complaining about urine odor.

We are the second kind. Carbotopia makes activated carbon and activated carbon fiber media and die-cuts it into finished litter box parts, with samples held in the US and every production order made to the buyer's specification. The rest of this guide is what a brand has to decide before ordering from us or anyone else.

Quick selection summary

If your litter box has The part is usually Why
A flat filter in a lid, vent or drawer A pre-cut strip or die-cut pad of activated carbon fiber Thin, flexible and cut to any outline; the customer swaps it in seconds
A cartridge slot on an automatic, self-cleaning unit A honeycomb carbon cartridge in a fabric-wrapped frame A rigid block holds its shape in a slot and lets air pass through the cells
No filter at all yet Start with the cavity: where air collects, how much depth there is The space decides the format before the media does

This is a starting point, not a performance ranking. Which format works best depends on how air moves through your housing, and that is something only a sample in your own product can show.

Decision 01 — The part format

The format follows the housing, not the other way round. A brand replacing an existing filter should send that filter or a clear photo of it with a ruler. A brand adding a filter to a product that never had one should send the dimensions of the space it has to fit and say where the odor collects.

  • Strips and pads are cut from activated carbon fiber cloth or felt. Our listed litter box strips are 100% knitted activated carbon fiber at 120 gsm; one of them measures 26.8 × 12.7 cm at 0.5–1 cm thick. Other sizes, densities and thicknesses are cut to order.
  • Die-cut shapes use the same media with a cutting tool made to your outline: curves, notches, tabs and holes for clips.
  • Honeycomb cartridges put a rigid honeycomb carbon block inside a fabric-wrapped frame, built to the dimensions of your cartridge slot.

Whichever format you choose, custom dimensions are confirmed in writing before production starts. That one step prevents most of the problems that come up later.

Decision 02 — The adsorbent: urine and feces are different molecules

"Carbon filter" describes the material, not the job. A litter box produces two different odor families, and no single adsorbent is strongest on both:

  • Urine odor is ammonia — a small polar molecule. Plain activated carbon is comparatively weak on it. Zeolite, a polar adsorbent, is the conventional choice for ammonia.
  • Fecal odor is mercaptans and sulfur compounds — exactly where activated carbon, and carbon fiber cloth in particular, is strong.

Two of our media matter most here. Our granular activated carbon mesh is the one carbon product in our range with a measured ammonia figure: ammonia adsorption ≥20% by weight on a static saturated-vapor test, with iodine value above 1000 mg/g; the report is available on request. Our zeolite filter media is zeolite on a polyester nonwoven base, 1–20 mm thick, and it die-cuts like filter cotton.

For a litter box we usually send carbon and zeolite samples together, so you can test them on their own and stacked in your housing. The reasoning behind that, with the test conditions, is in activated carbon vs zeolite for ammonia.

Decision 03 — Fit and the cutting outline

A replacement filter that needs trimming gets returned. The fit has to be right from the first unit, so the outline comes from the real part, not a description of it.

  1. Send the reference. The original filter, a drawing or DXF, or a photo with a ruler in frame.
  2. Agree the outline and thickness in writing. Thickness matters as much as length and width: a pad that is too thick will not close in a lid, and one that is too thin rattles in a slot.
  3. Test-fit the sample in your own product before you approve production, and check that the lid, drawer or cartridge door still closes normally.

Decision 04 — The replacement interval

Your customers will ask how often to change the filter, and the answer has to come from your product, not ours. There is no universal figure. The interval depends on how much adsorbent is in the part, how much air moves through it, and how many cats use the box. A covered pan for one cat and an automatic unit shared by several load the same pad very differently.

The practical order is the reverse of what most briefs assume. Decide the interval you want to sell on, such as monthly. We size the carbon loading and thickness to it, and you confirm it with your own use test. Starting from a pad and asking how long it lasts is how brands end up with returns.

Decision 05 — Packaging and private label

Packaging is decided per project: bulk for brands that pack in-house, retail-ready, or fully private-labeled under your brand. The practical terms:

  • Minimum order: 30 units for bulk orders, manufactured to your specification.
  • Samples: one free sample per buyer, held in the US; shipping is at your cost. They ship in 3–5 business days.
  • Pricing: quoted per project, because it depends on the media, the cutting steps, the packaging and the volume.
  • Documents: ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certificates and REACH, RoHS, TSCA and Prop 65 documents are on file; an SDS is available and a TDS is written to your requirement on request.

The table compares formats, not measured odor performance. We publish one ammonia figure (the granular carbon mesh) and no comparable odor test across all three, so the ranking for your product comes from your sample test.

How to check any litter box filter supplier

Whoever you buy from, three questions separate a manufacturer from a reseller:

  • Can you change the media? Ask for a different thickness, density or adsorbent and see whether the answer is a quote or a stock list.
  • Can you show the test behind each number? A figure without its method, sample and conditions is not a specification.
  • Whose name is on the certificates? The certificates should belong to the company that runs the production line.

The full checklist is in how to verify a carbon filter media supplier's quality claims.

What to send before requesting a sample

Copy this into your inquiry. Leave anything you are unsure about blank — the part you use now, or the cavity it has to fit, is usually enough to start.

  • Litter box type: [covered pan / top-entry / automatic self-cleaning]
  • The current filter: [send one, or a photo with a ruler; or "none yet"]
  • Space available: [length × width × maximum thickness, or cartridge slot dimensions]
  • Main complaint: [urine / ammonia, feces / sulfur, or both]
  • Replacement interval you want to sell: [e.g. monthly]
  • Packaging: [bulk / retail-ready / private label with your artwork]
  • Quantities: [sample quantity, first order, estimated annual volume]

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for private-label litter box filters?

Bulk orders have a 30-unit minimum and are manufactured to your specification. Packaging can be bulk, retail-ready or fully private-labeled; it is confirmed per project with the quote.

Can you match the filter my litter box uses now?

Yes, if we can see it. Send the original filter, a drawing or DXF, or a photo with a ruler, and tell us the thickness. Custom dimensions are confirmed in writing before production, and you should test-fit the sample in your own product before approving it.

Does activated carbon remove cat urine odor?

Not well on its own. Urine odor is ammonia, a small polar molecule, and plain activated carbon is comparatively weak on it. Zeolite or a carbon media with a measured ammonia figure is the better starting point. Activated carbon is strong on fecal odor — mercaptans and sulfur compounds — which is why litter box filters often need both.

How often should a litter box carbon filter be replaced?

There is no universal interval. It depends on the adsorbent mass in the part, the airflow through it and the number of cats. Decide the interval you want to sell on, have the loading and thickness sized to it, and confirm it with your own use test.

Are samples free?

One free sample per buyer, held in the US; shipping is at your cost. They ship in 3–5 business days.

Data sources and limitations

The strip specifications are from our own published product listings. The ammonia figure of ≥20% by weight is a static saturated-vapor result on our granular carbon mesh, measured on the material, not on a finished filter; it ranks media and is not a removal-efficiency or service-life figure. We publish no ammonia capacity for our zeolite media or for honeycomb carbon.

Nothing in this guide measures how a filter will perform in your litter box. Odor control depends on the airflow through your housing, the number of cats, the litter used and the replacement interval. Your own use test on a sample is the only result that applies to your product — and that is true of our parts as much as anyone else's.
