Three different chemistries. The media that beats one is weak on another — which is why we start by looking at the part you use now.
Urine — ammonia
A polar molecule. Activated carbon is comparatively weak here; zeolite does this job.

Feces — mercaptans
Sulfur and amine compounds. This is activated carbon cloth's home ground.
Adsorbs mercaptans several to tens of times more than granular carbon
General — mixed VOCs
Broad and continuous. Wants breathability more than raw capacity.
No carbon shedding · ≥92% filtration at 5 μm
Two parts both called a “carbon filter” can be completely different constructions.
