When the Masks Ran Out in Colorado
In the spring of 2020 I wasn’t thinking about filter media. I was a guy in a Colorado neighborhood whose neighbors couldn’t find masks. Here’s what happened — and why it still shows up in how we ship.
I live in Colorado. When the shutdowns started in the spring of 2020, the shelves emptied in a matter of days, and the thing nobody could find was the simplest one: a mask. Not the hospital-grade kind — the hospitals had their own fight, and I had no business in it. Just something ordinary families could wear to the grocery store.
What we actually did
We didn’t make them and we didn’t ship them in from China. There was no time for a container, and frankly that would have been the slower answer anyway. The company paid for several thousand of them, sourced from warehouse stock already sitting here in the United States.
Where they went
They went to an elementary school near me — teachers, staff, and families who came through to pick them up. I am not going to name it; it was their community before it was a story.
There was nothing corporate about any of it. No invoice, no PO number, no branded box, no photo op. It was a box of masks and a folding table.

Why a buyer should care
None of that is about filtration specs, and I’m not going to pretend it makes our carbon media better. But it does answer something people ask me all the time, usually in a more polite way: is there actually anyone on your end, or am I emailing a mailbox?
There is. It’s the same reason samples of our consumer lines sit on a shelf in the States instead of in a container, and the same reason a factory-direct question gets answered inside one business day instead of overnight-plus-a-time-zone. The US side of this company is a person who lives here. In 2020 that turned out to matter for reasons none of us planned for.
If you’re evaluating a supplier on the other side of the world, that’s the only thing I’d take from this: find out whether there’s a person on your side of the ocean, and find out what they do when something goes wrong.
